About FishTree Environmental Tehnologist

About / Professional Background

Jeff Davies is an environmental technologist with more than 20 years of progressive, hands-on experience in fisheries, forestry, environmental monitoring, and regulatory compliance across Western Canada. His career has been built almost entirely in field-based roles, working at the intersection of science, operations, and regulation in both government and private consulting environments.

Jeff began his career in forestry and environmental monitoring with private consulting firms, where he developed a strong foundation in habitat assessments, stream classification, water quality monitoring, culvert and bridge assessments, road surveys, and forest development layout. During this period, he worked on conventional, grapple yarding, and helicopter logging operations, gaining practical experience in harvest layout, cruising, road deactivation/reactivation, and operational planning in complex terrain.

He later expanded his regulatory and compliance experience through roles with Alberta Environment and Alberta Corrections, serving as a designated Peace Officer and Inspector under provincial legislation. These roles strengthened his understanding of environmental law, inspection procedures, enforcement processes, public communication, and conflict resolution. Working directly with industry, municipalities, and the public gave him a strong appreciation for practical, defensible decision-making in regulated environments.

Since 2019, Jeff has worked as a Fisheries Technician with the BC Public Service, where his work has focused on fisheries management, First Nations consultation, river restoration, small lake assessments, angler surveys, and compliance monitoring. He has played a lead role in developing and coordinating funded projects, including writing and managing requests for proposals, coordinating contractors, and overseeing field programs. His experience includes electrofishing, creel surveys, whirling disease sampling, rotenone treatment coordination, and technical reporting for provincially and externally funded projects.

Throughout his career, Jeff has consistently worked in roles that require independence, technical judgment, and reliability in the field. His experience spans early-stage data collection through to reporting and project coordination, allowing him to effectively support biologists, foresters, engineers, and project managers who need capable, field-ready technical support without the need to hire full-time staff.

Today, Jeff brings this combined background in consulting, government operations, and compliance to provide practical, technician-level services that are grounded in real-world experience, regulatory awareness, and a strong understanding of how projects function from planning through execution.

Education & Formal Training

Jeff’s professional foundation is supported by formal education in fisheries, wildlife, and conservation enforcement. He holds an Applied Science Degree in Conservation Enforcement from Lethbridge College, where his studies focused on natural resource law, environmental protection, compliance, and enforcement practices. This program provided a strong grounding in regulatory frameworks, inspection procedures, and the legal context in which natural resource work is carried out.

He also earned a Technical Diploma in Fish, Wildlife, and Recreation from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), with training centered on fisheries and wildlife biology, field sampling techniques, data collection, and environmental monitoring. Earlier in his career, Jeff completed a Bridge Watchman Certificate through BCIT’s Pacific Marine Training Centre, adding marine operations and safety training that has supported his work in and around aquatic environments.
